Teaching Approach

I have taught the piano for more than 30 years in a variety of teaching environments and with students of widely different ages and levels. I served as Associate Instructor at Indiana University as well as piano instructor at Westminster College in Salt Lake City. I also have taught privately over these years in Salt Lake City, and more recently, in Portland.

I am passionate about teaching. My goal is to create an inspiring and positive learning environment for my students. I coach them and help them realize how much they are capable of accomplishing. In my pedagogical approach to teaching piano:

  • I tailor my teaching to the individual student.
  • I aim to build the student’s fluency of note reading by recognition of intervals and patterns, while giving him/her a solid technique and the ability to perform with confidence.
  • I motivate students by selecting repertoire they are enthusiastic about.
  • I make sure my students fully understand good practice techniques so they can learn pieces quickly.
  • I believe students have the capacity to play with confidence if they are diligent and consistent in piano practice between lessons.
  • I focus on developing my students’ listening skills, vital to determining their tone production.
  • I encourage performing. Recitals are celebrations! The more often the student performs, the easier it becomes.

It brings me great joy to instill in my students a love of piano playing so that it will become an endeavor of a lifetime.
